JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Director of Development

Department: Administration

Reports To: Mother Teresa Pastor & SMA Board of Trustees until Principal is hired

FLSA Status: Full-time Exempt

Effective Date: April 1, 2022

SUMMARY 

The Development Director’s primary purpose is to facilitate the meaningful involvement of people in the mission and vision for the future of the Nolensville Campus, especially as it relates to the solicitation of major gifts and stewardship at all levels of donors.  Phase I of the campus will be the construction of St. Michael Academy, a Pre-k through 8 Regional Diocesan school; Phase II will be the construction of the church building for the recently formed parish of Mother Teresa Catholic Church; Phase III will be the eventual construction of a high school.  The Director designs, implements, and coordinates a comprehensive program that supports and advances the mission of the entire Nolensville Campus.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  1. Develops and implements a strategic plan for single and multi-year resource development, financial and otherwise, to be used for achieving the financial goals for all phases of the Nolensville Campus.
  2. Creates programs, activities, and initiatives that attract support for the Nolensville Campus.
  3. Develops and sustains positive and mutually rewarding relationships between the Nolensville Campus and its supporters (financial and otherwise.)
  4. Maintains ongoing and active networking with internal and external constituencies.
  5. Advises and supports the facilitation of the Nolensville Campus recognition and development events.  
  6. Collaborates with the Pastor, Principal and Board of Trustees on strategic plan design and other initiatives.
  7. Represents the Nolensville Campus to various and diverse individuals and groups; become immersed in the Nolensville community.
  8. Assists the Pastor, Board and Principal in building and nurturing long-term relationships that yield significant resources, financial and otherwise, from major supporters.
  9. Collaborates with the Pastor, Principal and the Board to build the Nolensville Campus’s image and awareness within the community.  Fosters engagement with external constituencies and communities.
  10. Assists with identifying strategies to increase funding without bias for the mission and vision of the entire Nolensville Campus. 
  11. Assists the Nolensville Campus at large in creating, planning, and preparing for major events which advance the mission.
  12. Represents the Nolensville Campus at large as an active member of appropriate local, regional, and/or national professional organizations; attends selected conferences and workshops.
  13. Develops, analyzes and secures a prospect list of individuals and groups who have the capacity and propensity to give; maintained as a current and ongoing listing.
  14. Identifies individuals who can make a difference, whether internal or external.
  15. Identifies strengths and opportunities for the church, school, and community, including but not limited to donated professional services or non-cash gifts for the benefit of the entire Nolensville campus.
  16. Informs all involved individuals (internal and external) and is committed to  transparency and timely accurate communication of newsworthy or other announcements of importance concerning the Nolensville Campus at large through newsletters, mailings, technology and media.  This includes preparing press releases, advertising, and all other promotional pieces. 
  17. Maintains and secures databases of the Nolensville Campus at large, including involved individuals such as school parents, benefactors, media personnel, and any individual or group with an interest in the Nolensville Campus community.
  18. Cultivates relationships with individuals referenced above personally and through meaningful events and activities which facilitate connection with the Nolensville Campus at large.
  19. Assesses and recommends improvements in internal marketing, public relations, and communications in areas such as: recruiting and retention, volunteers, special events, open houses, annual giving fund, major gifts, and planned giving.
  20. Accounts for and extends appreciation for gifts received.
  21. Maintains and secures accurate  records of directed gifts for the specific intentions of the donors to the Nolensville Campus at large.  
  22. Organizes and implements planned gatherings, events, campaigns, and publications focused on giving.
  23. Stays informed and educated on policies and trends affecting the development process by attending meetings and seminars or by individual research through the web or other publications or institutions.
  24. Assists the principal, Board of Trustees, Pastor, and staff as needed in response to development-related matters.
  25. Performs other duties as assigned by the Board of Trustees, principal, and Pastor, including but not limited to monthly reporting to the Mother Teresa Finance Council and SMA Board of Trustees of activities, planned events, and new pledges of large gifts.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  1. Bachelor's Degree in public relations, communications, or a related field.
  2. Significant (at least 5 years) of experience in mission advancement with demonstrated success.
  3. At least 3 years of experience in non-profit involvement, either as an employee or as a significantly contributing volunteer or advisory role.
  4. Prefer candidate with prior development-related experience in a Catholic church and/or Catholic school who demonstrates  a clear understanding of the Catholic mission. 
  5. Proven ability in donor prospect research is critical

  1. Demonstrated ability to embrace and share the Nolensville Campus’s mission.
  2. Ability to think strategically and analytically while acting tactically.
  3. Exceptional organizational skills.
  4. Ability to establish and manage multiple priorities with the capacity to work gracefully under pressure.
  5. Capacity to work collaboratively with a diverse group of staff, volunteers, supporters, suppliers, and other stakeholders.
  6. Understanding of IRS regulations regarding donations and fundraising.
  7. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  8. Ability to identify and implement best practices for advancement.
  9. Regular work attendance.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Prefer candidate with CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Executive) credential.

TECHNICAL SKILLS

  1. Excellent computer skills with Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  2. Experience using iWave, Blackbaud, or other fundraising data management system.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Superior communications skills: oral, written, and presentational; superior interpersonal communication skills.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES 

  1. Assistant Director of Development (when and if applicable)
  2. Coordinate with communications staff
  3. School parent and parishioner volunteers

WORKING CONDITIONS 

Regular Monday through Friday day time working hours.  Some evening and/or weekend work may be required, particularly when special events take place or if there is the need for attendance at after hours meetings. Overtime is occasionally required.  Occasional travel outside office is required – approximately 10%. Some schedule flexibility is available to ensure a work/life balance.
